[Guide for caregivers]
[BABYBUG is for babies who love to be read to—and for adults who love to read to them. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of this “let’s pretend” issue of BABYBUG.]
1. Kim and Carrots: Playing with your toddler is important, of course. But you can also support play as you go about your own routine. Simply watch and then offer additional materials based on what you notice. In this story, Daddy brings out a big box and sets a basket of chalk close at hand. After seeing Kim draw windows and a door, Daddy makes a tea set and comfy pillows available. Once pretending to live in a little house begins to wane, Daddy rekindles Kim’s interest in playing with the box by offering something new, a flag. Kim is free to use the play materials, or not, and also free to decide their meaning. Experience in making choices matters, both in play and in life.
2. The Chorus: In early spring, when branches are still bare, birds are easier to see. Put a simple bird identification book with good clear photos near a window, or take it along when you go outdoors. Eventually, your child might begin to identify various birds such as the bright red cardinal in this selection.
3. If I were a lighthouse: This poignant verse contains a heartfelt parenting truth good for all the years ahead. Memorize its comforting words for yourself as well as for your child.
