As the pace of life accelerates, cats, which are more adaptable to the lifestyle of superbusy modern people, become more and more popular in China. In addition to the growingnumber of cat owners, more and more people use social media to show their pet catsonline and many of them have been very successful due to millions of social mediafollowers. After work, many people like watching cat videos to relax, but most of them don’tpay much attention to the street cats who live a hard life in ever increasing numbers in ourcities.
This summer, I wanted to make a documentary about street cats in China, so I went toGuangdong which is a province in the south of China. During my trip, I heard Aqi’s story.Aqi is a young photographer and cat blogger in Shantou city. She’s different from thosebloggers who rely on their beautiful purebred cats to win popularity, Aqi always insists onshooting street cats. She carries cat food everyday in her backpack and takes photos ofevery street cat she encounters. She can remember most streets cats in her city and shelikes to make friends with them.
One day, I followed her and we explored the city together. She went to the city’s unknowncorners and looked for the stories about street cats as she did every day.
The rescue principle of TNR street cats is to trap all or most of the street cats in an area,sterilize them, check and return them to their original place. When the cats are released, amark indicating that they have been sterilized is made in the cat's ear. After release, therelevant personnel will continue to provide food, water, and the necessary resettlementenvironment, and pay attention to monitoring the newly added street cats. TNR providesadoption opportunities and places for street cats, especially young ones who are usuallymore friendly in their interactions with humans. The scientific management of street catpopulation in a certain area, can, o a certain extent, help to ensure the safety and health ofstreet cats, improve the living environment of street cats, and gradually improve thewelfare treatment and stability of street cats, so as to coordinate the relationship betweenpeople and street cats in the area. At present, the implementation of this method iseffective and feasible, but it is still not known and recognized by most people. At the sametime, this method is only implemented in affluent parts of cities, and the implementationcoverage is small, limited by geographical, environmental and economic factors.
After a day’s shooting, Aqi usually spends time photoshopping the photos she has takenduring the day. And then she will upload these photos to her social media account andwrite down the stories behind them. She is active on Weibo and Lofter. Now she has morethan 13.3 thousand followers on Weibo and she has begun to make a name for herself asa cat photographer. She wants to use her photos to make people realize that not onlyexpensive pure cats are lovely, but also the common street cats can be beautiful and havea good personality too. She wishes that the people who have seen her photos would paymore attention to the protection of street cats and that every street cat might have a betterlife in the future.
When I left Shantou, I remembered Aqi’s words again. She said that some of the street cats,she only saw once and never met them again. Maybe the photos she took are the only proof of theirexistence.
