Despite society’s best efforts, poverty still persists as one of the world’s worst problems. On October 16, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping, pledged to eradicate poverty in China by 2020. Specifically, his aim was to lift all 70 million Chinese people living on less than a dollar a day out of poverty within the following five years.

In order to achieve that lofty goal, the central government called on agencies, institutions and major enterprises across the country to make every effort to raise the income of the poor. Between2013 to 2016, the total number of rural Chinese people lifted from poverty reached over 55 million. This is a great achievement. But how did they do it? To find out, our host Kyle will lead us to a provincial poverty village in Raoyang County of Hebei province.

In fact, the story of this village epitomizes Chinas efforts to alleviate poverty for thousands of its people in rural areas, from Yunnan and Guizhou in southwestern China, to Qinghai and Gansu in the northwest, along with other locales in the south and in the northeast.

Though the geographical conditions are different throughout those regions, and the economic development is uneven, countless people are comprehensively joining a more well-off society. From senior government officials to ordinary villagers, people both young and old, from a variety of backgrounds are all forming a great force to change this country under the inspiration of a great goal.
